The Freedom 39 rig is unusual but highly practical and effective. Utilizing carbon-fiber un-stayed masts (which have been proven by many hundreds of ocean crossings) the vessel is a cat rigged schooner with her forward mast near the bow and her main mast just forward of the main salon.
This conventional mainsail arrangement with fully battened sails, lazy jacks, and solid Vang results in an easily managed yet powerful sail plan. All sail handling lines are led aft.

From the large cockpit the companionway leads via a spiral staircase to the main cabin with a raised settee and table to port allowing for comfortable seating, dining and viewing for up to 5 people while swinging on the hook or at the dock. To starboard is the navigation table and a single berth.
At the base of the companionway aft is a large double berth, locker and small seating area. Forward of the main cabin is the large galley to port with ample storage and with the forward head compartment to starboard with a separate stall shower. Forward again is the forward cabin with large double V-Berth.
The interior of the vessel is extremely roomy, light and has ample storage for extended cruising gear and supplies. The galley has a 3 burners propane range with oven and a drop-in “Isotherm” fridge.
Ron Holland crafted a thoroughly modern, low wetted surface design. Consistent with contemporary thinking, the entry features sections that are U shaped yet retain enough rocker to forestall uncomfortable motion to weather in a seaway. At the 25 – 30 degrees heal which traditional hulls assume to weather, their V shaped forward sections become parallel to the water plane and actually cause dramatic slamming in a seaway. Spartan’s substantial beam assures great form stability, the circular midship sections do more than keep wetted surface at minimum: they also promote stability of motion and therefore sea-kindness.
The extant to which the beam is carried well aft yield further dividends both in spaciousness and stability. In the accommodations, it makes possible a large double berth in the aft cabin, a surprising spacious main cabin, ample sized galley, and head that includes an enclosed stand-up shower. The Freedom 39 was designed to be a stiff vessel even at her “light condition” displacement of 18,500 lbs.
At her fully loaded displacement of 22,500 lbs., the stiffness of Spartan is yet increased since displacement is the most important component of form stability. Provided of course that the added weight is kept low, tankage, batteries chain etc. are located at or below the waterline.
Spartan’s stability is also enhanced by an extremely large rudder located all the way aft thereby maximizing downwind control. A substantial skeg protects both rudder and propeller and provides the rudder with the additional support of a lower bearing. The racy looking fin keel is actually 12 feet long.
All Freedom were designed with a freestanding rig in mind. The forces in a freestanding rig are taken up by the hull and deck structural box. There is no compression load from shrouds on mast base, and the forces from the rig are not taken up by frame that connects the mast base, keel frame and shroud attachments points. On the Freedom Raised Deck Salon, the hull is designed to take up the torsional forces from two masts moving athwart-ships independently from each-other and acting to twist the hull. The hulls are built very rigid (but relatively light) to withstand the combination of all the forces. The low rig on the two mast Freedoms allows for a relatively low ballast ratio of about 30% making the movements at sea relatively smooth compared to her stayed brethren.
